SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Lois L. Tyson of Oak Park, who passed away on July 23, 2023 at the age of 80; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was born in East St. Louis on February 27, 1943; she graduated from Lincoln Senior High School before majoring in elementary education with a concentration in English at Southern Illinois University; she married Spencer A. Tyson, and they had two daughters, Kimberly and Nicole, and lived in Georgia and New Jersey before returning to Illinois; she earned her master's degree in education from Concordia University, and she possessed a real estate license; she was a longtime resident of Oak Park and River Forest; and

WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Lois Tyson taught at the Eunice Smith School in Alton and Oak Park Elementary School District 97; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was devoted to serving local organizations, including Parents Allied with Children and Teachers for Tomorrow (PACTT) and the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO) Sisterhood, where she served as president of the local chapter from 2014 to 2017; she attended Pilgrim Congregational Church; she contributed to the Lovejoy Memorial Scholarship Fund and the United Negro College Fund; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was a valued and devoted volunteer and friend of the Democratic Party of Oak Park; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson and her husband enjoyed traveling the world, hosting parties, and valuing their familial relationships and friendships; together, they also enrolled in the Minority Aging Research Study with Rush University's Alzheimer's Center, hoping their contributions would help improve healthcare for all Black Americans; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson enjoyed cooking and baking, and she was known for her carrot cake; she also enjoyed shopping, dancing, and reading; she was especially skilled in writing; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Odice and Susie; her siblings, Otis Granger Jr. and Bernadette Barry; and her nieces, Denise Michelle Tyson, Sheila Patterson, and Leslie Tyson; and

WHEREAS, Lois Tyson is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Goldbaum and Nicole Tyson; her son-in-law, Nathan Goldbaum; her sisters, Mary S. Lauburg and Eloise Granger; her siblings-in-law, John Barry Sr. and Anita (Freddie) Carter; her nieces and nephews, Mark (Ann) Lauburg, Dr. Vanessa (Jen) Cohen-Gibbons, John W. (Angel) Barry, Jerome Burton, Dawn Burton, Dayne Tyson, Bonita (Larnel) Washington, Deidra (Dennis) Moore, Lorraine Lucas, Nathan (Tobie) Tyson, Regan Hickman, Jimmie Wilson Jr., Debra Wilson, Missy White, Charles Cooper, Dr. Carol (Tess Schmieg) Goldbaum, and Elizabeth (Stan Sheft) Thomas; and a host of extended family members and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Lois L. Tyson and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lois Tyson as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
