HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Gun violence continues to devastate communities across the State of Illinois, taking the lives of individuals from all walks of life, leaving families in mourning, and impacting neighborhoods, schools, and local economies; and

WHEREAS, In 2024, the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago have seen a tragic loss of lives due to gun violence with the victim's families and communities affected by the ripple effects of these senseless acts of violence, with an estimated 1,400 deaths reported for the State and 505 deaths from gun violence being reported in the Chicago area alone; and

WHEREAS, Gun violence disproportionately impacts certain communities, especially those in urban and economically disadvantaged areas, where access to resources and support systems are often limited, leading to repeated cycles of violence and trauma; and

WHEREAS, It is essential to honor and remember the lives lost to gun violence, recognizing the humanity and dignity of each individual who was taken too soon; and

WHEREAS, It is imperative for the State to commit to taking meaningful steps to address the root causes of gun violence, including poverty, lack of access to mental health care, limited opportunities for youth, and systemic inequities that fuel cycles of violence; and

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois has taken steps in previous years to fund and implement violence prevention programs, and it is imperative that these efforts continue with a focus on long-term solutions, community-led initiatives, and coordination between local, state, and federal resources; and

WHEREAS, Prioritizing funding for violence prevention and reduction efforts in disproportionately impacted areas of the state, where gun violence has been a persistent challenge for years and where additional resources are needed, is essential to building safer, stronger, and more resilient communities; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That we reaffirm our commitment to continue and to expand funding for violence prevention programs across the State with special attention and priority given to communities that have long experienced the devastating effects of gun violence, particularly those that are disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge local, state, and the federal government to work collaboratively to create safer communities through targeted investments in education, job creation, mental health support, community policing, and other violence reduction strategies while working to address the root causes of violence and inequality in our society; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we reaffirm our commitment to the ongoing fight to end gun violence in all forms and to ensure that future generations grow up in a state where they are safe, supported, and given every opportunity to thrive; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be delivered to Chicago Superintendent of Police Larry B. Snelling, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Governor JB Pritzker, and Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton.
