    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

represented in the General Assembly:

    Section 5. The Public Safety Employee Benefits Act is

amended  by changing Section 3 as follows:

    Sec. 3. Definitions
Definition. For the purposes of this

Act:

    "Firefighter"
, the term "firefighter"
includes, without 
10
limitation, a licensed emergency medical technician (EMT) who

11
is a sworn member of a public fire department.

    "Catastrophic injury" means consequences of an injury that 
13
permanently prevent an individual from performing any gainful 
14
work.

    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
