1 AMENDMENT TO HOUSE BILL 221
2 AMENDMENT NO. . Amend House Bill 221 by replacing
3 the title with the following:
4 "AN ACT to amend the Illinois Vehicle Code by adding
5 Section 3-639."; and
6 by replacing everything after the enacting clause with the
7 following:
8 "Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
9 adding Section 3-639 as follows:
10 (625 ILCS 5/3-639 new)
11 Sec. 3-639. Deceased police officer or firefighter
12 plates.
13 (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of all applicable fees
14 and applications made in the form prescribed by the
15 Secretary, may issue special registration plates to the
16 surviving spouse or, if no spouse exists, the parents of a
17 police officer or firefighter who has died in the line of
18 duty in this State. The special plates issued pursuant to
19 this Section shall be affixed only to passenger vehicles of
20 the first division or motor vehicles of the second division
21 weighing not more than 8,000 pounds.

1 Plates issued under this Section shall expire according
2 to the multi-year procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of
3 this Code.
4 (b) The design and color of the special plates shall be
5 wholly within the discretion of the Secretary. Appropriate
6 documentation, as determined by the Secretary, shall
7 accompany each application.
8 (c) An applicant for the special plate shall be charged
9 a $15 fee for original issuance in addition to the
10 appropriate registration fee. This additional fee shall be
11 deposited into the Secretary of State Special License Plate
12 Fund, to be used by the Secretary to help defray the
13 administrative processing costs.
14 For each registration renewal period, a $2 fee, in
15 addition to the appropriate registration fee, shall be
16 charged. This additional fee shall be deposited into the
17 Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund.
18 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect
19 January 1, 1998.".
