Amends the Lead Poisoning Prevention Act. Provides that
physicians and health care providers may screen children for
lead poisoning in conjunction with the school health exam
when, in the physician's judgment, the child is potentially
at high risk of lead poisoning.

1 AN ACT to amend the Lead Poisoning Prevention Act by
2 changing Section 6.2.
3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
4 represented in the General Assembly:
5 Section 5. The Lead Poisoning Prevention Act is amended
6 by changing Section 6.2 as follows:
7 (410 ILCS 45/6.2) (from Ch. 111 1/2, par. 1306.2)
8 Sec. 6.2. Physicians to screen children.
9 (a) Every physician licensed to practice medicine in all
10 its branches or health care provider shall screen children 6
11 months to 6 years of age for lead poisoning, in accordance
12 with guidelines and criteria set forth by the American
13 Academy of Pediatrics, at the priority intervals and using
14 the methods specified in the guidelines.
15 (b) Each licensed, registered, or approved health care
16 facility serving children from 6 months to 6 years of age,
17 including but not limited to, health departments, hospitals,
18 clinics, and health maintenance organizations approved,
19 registered, or licensed by the Department, shall take the
20 appropriate steps to ensure that the patients receive lead
21 poisoning screening, where medically indicated or
22 appropriate.
23 (c) Children 6 years and older may also be screened by
24 physicians or health care providers, in accordance with
25 guidelines and criteria set forth by the American Academy of
26 Pediatrics, according to the priority intervals specified in
27 the guidelines. Physicians and health care providers may also
28 screen children for lead poisoning in conjunction with the
29 school health examination, as required under the School Code,
30 when, in the medical judgment of the physician, the child is
31 potentially at high risk of lead poisoning.

1 (d) Nothing in this Section shall be construed to
2 require any child to undergo a lead blood level screening or
3 test whose parent or guardian objects on the grounds that the
4 screening or test conflicts with his or her religious
5 beliefs.
