1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly
3 were saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Eugene L.
4 Bungay of Breese, Illinois on February 3, 1997; and
5 WHEREAS, Father Bungay was born on Staten Island, New
6 York on April 4, 1922; and
7 WHEREAS, Before joining the priesthood, Eugene Bungay was
8 a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, as well as
9 working for the Secretary of State's office in Springfield,
10 Illinois; and
11 WHEREAS, Father Bungay was ordained May 27, 1958 in the
12 Belleville Diocese by the Most Reverend Albert R. Zuroweste,
13 and continued to serve the Belleville Diocese until his
14 death; and
15 WHEREAS, Father Bungay served as Associate Pastor for St.
16 Mary's in Carlyle, Holy Angels and St. Elizabeth's in East
17 St. Louis, St. Peter Cathedral and St. Luke in Belleville,
18 and St. Stephen in Caseyville; and
19 WHEREAS, Father Bungay served as Senior Pastor for St.
20 Cecilia in Bartelso, St. Augustine of Canterbury in Hecker,
21 St. John the Baptist in Red Bud, St. Joseph in Prairie du
22 Rocher, St. Augustine in Breese, and St. John Nepomucene in
23 Dahlgren; and
24 WHEREAS, Father Bungay served on the Marriage Tribunal,
25 and was a longtime member of the Clergymen's Aid Society; and
26 WHEREAS, Father Bungay served in the ministry until
27 January 25, 1991, when he retired and moved into the Hincke
28 Residence for Priests in Belleville; and
29 WHEREAS, On several occasions, Father Bungay served both
30 the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate

1 as Chaplain for the day; and
2 WHEREAS, Father Bungay is survived by his two sisters,
3 Mildred Whitehouse and Jane Caramante, and several nieces and
4 nephews; Father Bungay also is survived by his extended
5 adopted family, that includes: James and Ruth Donnewald and
6 family, the late Raymond Donnewald and Alvina Donnewald and
7 family, Carl and Mary Ackmann and family, Clyde and Patricia
8 Dorries and family, Robert and Juanita Moore and family, Al
9 and Irene Romo, and several other former parishioners and
10 friends from his many years of ministry to God's community of
11 believers; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
14 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we honor the memory of
15 Reverend Eugene L. Bungay of Breese, and acknowledge his
16 years of dedicated service to the people of the Belleville
17 area; and be it further
18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Reverend Bungay.
