1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, a native of Columbia,
3 South Carolina, received a bachelor's degree from Saint
4 Mary's Seminary, Baltimore; he later attended the Catholic
5 University of America and received a master's degree in
6 education; and
7 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin was ordained in 1952 for the
8 Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, where he served as
9 parish priest, Chancellor, and Vicar General; and
10 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin was appointed Auxiliary
11 Bishop of Atlanta in 1966 by Pope Paul VI; he became
12 Archbishop of Cincinnati in November, 1972, where he served
13 for nearly 10 years; and
14 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin was appointed Archbishop of
15 Chicago by Pope John Paul II on July 10, 1982; he was
16 elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals in January, 1983;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin served on numerous committees
19 for both the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the
20 United States Catholic Conference; he was Chairman of the
21 NCCB Committee on Marriage and Family Life and Chairman of
22 the Ad Hoc Committee on War and Peace; and
23 WHEREAS, the Cardinal was also Chancellor of the Catholic
24 Church Extension Society and the University of St. Mary of
25 the Lake; he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
26 the Catholic University of America, and Chairman of the
27 President's National Advisory Council, University of South
28 Carolina; and

1 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin has received many accolades,
2 including numerous honorary doctorates from colleges and
3 universities in the United States and Europe; and
4 WHEREAS, on September 9, 1996, President Clinton awarded
5 Cardinal Bernardin the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the
6 nation's highest civilian honor bestowed on individuals who
7 have made important contributions to their communities and
8 the nation; and
9 WHEREAS, His leadership helped unite the Catholic
10 Community of Chicago; his work touched the lives of many and
11 served as a beacon of hope for people of all faiths; he was a
12 philanthropist and advocate for numerous causes; and
13 WHEREAS, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin continued to uplift
14 and inspire us even after being diagnosed with cancer; and
15 WHEREAS, Cardinal Bernardin has begun a new life and he
16 will be deeply missed by all those who knew him and heard of
17 his works on earth; therefore, be it
18 WHEREAS, the North Avenue in Chicago, or Illinois Route
19 64, from Lake Shore Drive to Interstate 294 is traveled by
20 persons loved by the Cardinal; and
21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that in
23 celebration of the life of His Eminence Joseph Cardinal
24 Bernardin with sincere remembrance of his devoted service and
25 compassion for all persons, that this body designates the
26 part of Illinois Route 64 that is within the state of
27 Illinois, specifically that portion between Lake Shore Drive
28 and Interstate 294, as the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Memorial

1 Avenue which shall bear the name "Cardinal Bernardin Avenue";
2 and be it further
3 RESOLVED, that in cooperation with the appropriate local
4 governments the Illinois Department of Transportation shall
5 post appropriate signs, markers, or plaques along the highway
6 in recognition of this designation; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this Preamble and
8 Resolution be presented to his family, to the Archdiocese of
9 Chicago to commemorate Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, and to the
10 Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
