1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, More than three decades after the passage of the
3 Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, women
4 and people of color continue to suffer the consequences of
5 unfair pay differentials; and
6 WHEREAS, April 11, 1997, is the day on which American
7 women's wages for 1997, when added to their entire 1996
8 earnings, finally equal what men earned in 1996 alone; and
9 WHEREAS, Ensuring fair pay is an essential part of
10 helping women and their families become and remain
11 self-sufficient, strengthens the security of families today,
12 and enhances retirement tomorrow; and
13 WHEREAS, When women and people of color are paid fairly,
14 families are stronger, business prospers, and American values
15 and economy are strengthened; therefore, be it
16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18 call upon government officials, law enforcement agencies,
19 business and industry leaders, educators, and all people of
20 Illinois to recognize the full value of women and people of
21 color to the labor force and to ensure they are paid fairly
22 for their work; and be it further
23 RESOLVED, That we proclaim Friday, April 11, 1997, as
24 National Pay Inequity Awareness Day in Illinois.
