1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, June 23, 1997 will commemorate 25 years since
3 the enactment of Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendment
4 Act; and
5 WHEREAS, Title IX prohibits discrimination based upon
6 gender in access to any and all educational programs
7 receiving federal funds, including athletics; and
8 WHEREAS, The success of Title IX has resulted in
9 increased numbers of female students completing high school
10 and college degrees, as well as opening up new opportunities
11 and careers, including those in the sciences and engineering;
12 and
13 WHEREAS, Title IX's impact has been widely recognized as
14 a major influence in the increased numbers and quality of
15 female athletes, as well as playing a critical role in
16 reducing teen pregnancy, enhancing health and self-esteem,
17 and improving academic performance; and
18 WHEREAS, The Illinois Gender Equity Commission is a
19 not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the
20 principles embodied in Title IX and the effective, full
21 implementation of Title IX in every school in the State of
22 Illinois; and
23 WHEREAS, On June 23, 1997 the Illinois Gender Equity
24 Commission will celebrate along with all Illinois residents
25 the 25th anniversary of Title IX; therefore, be it
26 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
27 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
28 rededicate ourselves to the spirit and the letter of Title
29 IX, ensuring that equal educational and athletic opportunity
30 be available to all Illinois students in every school
31 district in the State; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That we offer our deep appreciation for the
2 contributions and work of the Illinois Gender Equity
3 Commission in their efforts to bring full and equal
4 opportunity to all Illinois school children; and be it
5 further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to the members of the Illinois Gender Equity
8 Commission on June 23, 1997 at their celebration of the 25th
9 anniversary of the passage of Title IX and to the members of
10 the State Board of Education.
