1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois wishes to honor the one
3 hundredth birthday celebration of Maggie H. Foster of
4 Chicago, Illinois on July 23, 1997; and
5 WHEREAS, Maggie Foster was born on July 23, 1897 in
6 Columbus, Mississippi; her parents were Reverend and Mrs.
7 Charles James; Maggie was the third of seven children born to
8 this union; and
9 WHEREAS, Maggie Foster attended school at Weeping Mary
10 Baptist Church in Isola, Mississippi; at an early age she was
11 baptized into the kingdom of God at that same church; and
12 WHEREAS, Maggie Foster married John Hampton in 1913; John
13 and Maggie moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1922; to this loving
14 marriage three children were born: John Jr., Eddie, and
15 Sarah; sadly, John Sr. passed away in 1925; and
16 WHEREAS, Maggie married Lovejoy Foster in 1929; Lovejoy
17 Foster worked as a laborer; he served his country in World
18 War I, and received the Medal of Valor for serving overseas
19 in France; Maggie and Lovejoy had one child, Lovejoy Foster
20 Jr.; and
21 WHEREAS, Maggie was employed as a seamstress with the
22 World Renowned Katherine Dunham Dancers in the late 1930's
23 and early 1940's; and
24 WHEREAS, Maggie and her husband joined Olivet Baptist
25 Church, under the pastorate of Reverend Doctor J. H. Jackson;
26 Maggie served her church as a member of the Missionary
27 Society, and the Sisterhood of Andrew and Peter; Maggie also
28 served as a delegate to the National Baptist Convention; and
29 WHEREAS, In 1960, after moving to the Chatham area, on
30 the southside of Chicago, Maggie and Lovejoy joined the

1 Maryland Avenue Baptist Church; they served under the
2 ministry of Reverend Huford Norwood; Maggie attended and
3 graduated from Moody Bible Institute in 1970; she taught
4 adult Sunday School classes, as well as Bible classes; Maggie
5 also served as a member of the 700 East 89th Street Block
6 Club; and
7 WHEREAS, Maggie will celebrate her birthday Saturday,
8 July 26, 1997; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 honor Maggie H. Foster on the celebration of this monumental
12 milestone in her life; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to Maggie Foster on the celebration of her
15 birthday.
