1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Jerry
4 Gibbons of Evergreen Park, Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Jerry Gibbons was the editor of the Southwest
6 Messenger newspapers from 1990 to 1997; Jerry Gibbons was
7 born in Chicago, Illinois on February 14, 1930; Mr. Gibbons
8 and his wife Mary lived in the St. Bernadette Parish of
9 Evergreen Park; and
10 WHEREAS, Jerry Gibbons attended Our Lady of Peace Grammar
11 School and Leo High School; Mr. Gibbons earned his Bachelor
12 of Arts in psychology from Loyola University; and
13 WHEREAS, Jerry Gibbons was an active part of the
14 Republican party in the Chicago area; in 1962 he served as
15 President of the 8th Ward Young Republicans Organization; in
16 1962 he also ran as a candidate for State Senator of the 5th
17 District; in 1963 he ran for the office of Alderman of the
18 8th Ward; and
19 WHEREAS, Jerry Gibbons served as a trustee of the
20 Evergreen Park Library Board for over seven years; he served
21 as the Great Books discussion leader for the Evergreen Park,
22 Oak Lawn, and Beverly libraries; through his example, he
23 taught young people and students to further their interest in
24 reading and literacy related topics; and
25 WHEREAS, Jerry Gibbons was active in the Evergreen Park
26 Chamber of Commerce, including serving the Chamber as their
27 President in 1993; Mr. Gibbons was a member of the Illinois
28 Press Association; he was a veteran and a member of the
29 American Legion Post No. 854 for more than fifteen years; and
30 WHEREAS, In addition to his loving wife Mary, Jerry
31 Gibbons is survived by his two daughters Moira and Sheila;

1 therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
4 mourn, along with his family and friends, the death of Jerry
5 Gibbons of Evergreen Park, Illinois; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to the family of Jerry Gibbons along with our
8 sincere condolences.
