1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Illinois has lost a valued and respected citizen
3 with the death of Eleanor Bernice Stockbar Sullivan of
4 Chicago, Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Eleanor Sullivan was born on August 29, 1913 in
6 Lockport, Illinois; her parents were John and Nell Stockbar,
7 from whom she learned the love of family and faith; her
8 mother taught her to embrace the Catholic Church, and her
9 father brought great joy to her upbringing; and
10 WHEREAS, Although tragedy touched Eleanor's life at the
11 early age of nineteen when she lost both of her parents to
12 cancer, her life found new love when she met Michael J.
13 Sullivan, who she married in 1937; their strong and enduring
14 marriage brought them thirteen children; first came Michael,
15 John Patrick, then the twins, Tom and Ted, Sharon, Dennis,
16 Jerry, the second set of twins, Kevin and Brian, Mary Kay,
17 Jim, Joan, and Joe; and
18 WHEREAS, Eleanor Sullivan's family will always remember
19 the everlasting love and loyalty that their parents shared
20 for their children and each other; the priceless moments that
21 they spent together, including the laughter over all the
22 years at their home on Racine and St. Louis; the generosity
23 to all where no one was ever turned away from dinner or a
24 bed; and the wonderful example that Eleanor and Mike set for
25 each succeeding generation; and
26 WHEREAS, Eleanor Sullivan's commitment to children first
27 became evident when she attended St. Mary's College in
28 Milwaukee and later studied at the Chicago Teacher's College,
29 which prepared her for a career as a teacher in the Chicago
30 Public Schools for twenty-five years, teaching at William
31 Penn School and Cook Elementary School as well as Visitation
32 Elementary School; and

1 WHEREAS, Eleanor Sullivan was a former member of St.
2 Kilian's Catholic Church and attended Queen of Martyrs
3 Church, which witnessed her total devotion to her Catholic
4 faith, the source of her strength and peace; and
5 WHEREAS, Eleanor Sullivan is survived by her loving
6 children, Michael, John, Dennis, Kevin, Edwin, Gerald, Brian,
7 James, Joseph, Sharon Knight, Mary Kay Quinlan, and Joan
8 Springer; her forty-nine grandchildren, and seventeen
9 great-grandchildren; although he did not survive his mother,
10 her son, Thomas always remained close to Eleanor's heart and
11 to the hearts of their entire family; therefore, be it
12 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14 send our condolences to the family and friends of Eleanor
15 Bernice Stockbar Sullivan of Chicago, Illinois; and be it
16 further
17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of Bernice Sullivan, along with our
19 sympathy.
