1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Melba
4 Bynum Burse; and
5 WHEREAS, Melba Burse was born in Marktree, Arkansas, one
6 of six children to the union of Nathan and Inez Nails; she
7 was surrounded by four loving brothers, LeEster, Elvis,
8 James, and Eugene, and one sister, Connie; she attended
9 elementary and secondary schools in Hayti, Missouri; she
10 earned her Bachelor's Degree in Commercial Education from
11 Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri and her
12 Master's Degree in Urban Education from Governor's State
13 University in University Park, Illinois; and
14 WHEREAS, Melba Burse was first wed to Edward C. Bynum and
15 was a loving and devoted wife; Edward and Melba had two
16 daughters, Casandra and Vanessa; in later years, Melba met
17 and married Grover Burse, with whom she resided until his
18 demise; and
19 WHEREAS, Melba Burse accepted Christ at an early age; her
20 faith and love of the Lord was exemplified in every facet of
21 her life; she was an active member of the church of Good
22 Shepherd and more recently the Park Manor Congregational
23 Church, both located in Chicago, Illinois; and
24 WHEREAS, Melba Burse devoted her professional career to
25 the teaching and nurturing of children; she worked for over
26 forty years for the Chicago Board of Education; the last
27 thirty years were spent at the Raymond Elementary School
28 where she earned and enjoyed the respect of her fellow
29 teachers, her pupils, and her principals; and
30 WHEREAS, In 1984, Melba Burse became a member of the
31 National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Mu Chapter; she

1 served on many committees and attended numerous conferences
2 where her expertise was valued; her support of Mu Chapter's
3 five-point program was immense and greatly appreciated; and
4 WHEREAS, The caring and sharing spirit of this quiet,
5 soft-spoken woman was perhaps most evident among those
6 friends who banded together in a close-knit group known as
7 the Chatterettes Social Club; the club was organized over
8 forty years ago and has been sustained through good times and
9 bad, happy times and sad; together, they enjoyed and
10 celebrated the marriages, births, and milestones achieved by
11 each member; they also mourned and comforted each other when
12 ill health and accidents plagued them; Melba was always ready
13 to extend herself and could be counted on for her wisdom and
14 strength; and
15 WHEREAS, Despite the many hours devoted to family,
16 profession, and community, Melba enjoyed the beauty of
17 flowers through gardening and the beauty of the world through
18 travel; she truly loved to see and experience all that God's
19 earth had to offer; and
20 WHEREAS, Melba Burse leaves to cherish her memory two
21 loving daughters, Casandra and Vanessa; three granddaughters,
22 Venus, Felicia, and Rosalind; two uncles, James Davis of
23 Gary, Indiana, and William "Elzie" McKinney of Grand Rapids,
24 Michigan; two aunts, Inell and Mary McKinney of Grand Rapids,
25 Michigan; two nieces, Minnie Louise Foster of Pensacola,
26 Florida, and Deborah Nails of Chicago, Illinois; one nephew,
27 Marvel Nails of Dolton, Illinois; three sisters-in-law,
28 Gloria Nails, Anna Nails, and Reverend Mary Nails, all of
29 Chicago, Illinois; and a myriad of cousins living throughout
30 the United States; therefore, be it
31 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
32 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

1 mourn, along with her many friends and family members, the
2 death of Melba Bynum Burse; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Melba Bynum Burse, along with our
5 sincere sympathies.
