1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois realizes the impact of
3 Native Americans on State history and culture; and
4 WHEREAS, The Native Americans shared everything they had
5 and at first welcomed the newcomers to their land until they
6 were treated unfairly; and
7 WHEREAS, Many tribes stayed friendly with the settlers of
8 America; the Pilgrims were greeted with friendliness and
9 taught to grow crops to live; and
10 WHEREAS, From food to medicines, we owe the Native
11 Americans much more then we have given them as a people; some
12 of the medicines we use today were developed from the herbs
13 and knowledge of the Native Americans; and
14 WHEREAS, The Illinois Confederacy tribes are all now
15 known as the Peoria, including the Peoria, Kaskaskia,
16 Cahokia, Tamaroa, Michigamea; Wea; Piankeshaw; Kickapoo; Sac
17 and Fox; Potawatomi; and Winnebago; and
18 WHEREAS, Other tribes that we know have lived here at
19 least for a short while were the Shawnee, Delaware, Miami,
20 Iowa, Cherokee, Ottawa, Chippewa, and Menominee; and
21 WHEREAS, The State is named after the Illinois
22 Confederacy tribes; and
23 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois realizes the need for
24 recognition of these Americans; therefore, be it
25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
26 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
27 hereby designate that October be named Native American Month
28 in the State of Illinois; and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
