1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Adriana Gutierrez for
4 her fine work and the many accolades she has received; and
5 WHEREAS, Adriana was born in Tepatitlan, Jalisco, Mexico,
6 fourteen years ago; her parents are Ismael and Mercedes
7 Gutierrez; Adriana has two sisters and six brothers; and
8 WHEREAS, Adriana registered at Hedges Elementary School
9 for the sixth grade; since Adriana did not know how to speak
10 English, she was placed in a bilingual classroom; for two
11 years she faced a period of adjustment to her new school; in
12 February of 1997 Adriana won the Science Fair Competition at
13 Hedges and went on to represent her school in the Regional
14 Science Fair; she went on to be a finalist at the City
15 Science Fair; and
16 WHEREAS, Adriana won a citywide essay competition
17 sponsored by the Inner City Games in May of 1997; her essay
18 "I Can Make Chicago a Great Place to Live" won first place,
19 beating 28,000 other entries; on June 12, 1997 she went with
20 her mother and her writing teacher, Ms. Guillermina
21 Rodriguez, to accept the award from the Board of Education;
22 and
23 WHEREAS, Adriana graduated from Hedges Elementary School
24 with certificates for her outstanding achievements; she
25 entered in a nationwide contest sponsored by the United
26 States Environmental Protection Agency in August of 1997;
27 throughout the summer she worked on a project investigating
28 the disposal of used motor oil in her community, sending out
29 surveys to local businesses, teachers, and citizens to assess
30 their knowledge of motor oil recycling; her hard work paid
31 off in January of 1998 when she became the recipient of the
32 President's Environmental Youth Award in region 5, where the

1 competition was between Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota,
2 Michigan, and Wisconsin; and
3 WHEREAS, In February of 1998 Adriana received a
4 certificate signed by President Bill Clinton for her services
5 in environmental protection; on March 25, 1998 she flew to
6 Washington, D.C. with her sponsor and mentor, Ms. Guillermina
7 Rodriguez, to present the project "What Goes Down Comes Up";
8 on March 26, 1998 Adriana accepted her award in a National
9 Ceremony in the White House; therefore be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 congratulate Adriana Gutierrez on her hard work, her
13 dedication, and her determination to be the best at what she
14 does; she can be proud of the many awards, honors, and
15 certificates she has received; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to Adriana Gutierrez, along with our sincere
18 compliments on a job well done.
