1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Francis E. George was born on January 16, 1937
3 in Chicago, the son of Francis and Julia George and the
4 brother of Margaret Mary Cain; and
5 WHEREAS, He was ordained a priest of the Missionary
6 Oblates of Mary Immaculate on December 21, 1963; and
7 WHEREAS, He was granted a Bachelors in Theology from the
8 University of Ottawa, Canada and completed a Master of Arts
9 in Philosophy at the Catholic University of America in
10 Washington, D.C. in 1965; and
11 WHEREAS, Reverend Francis E. George completed a doctorate
12 in American philosophy at Tulane University in New Orleans in
13 1970 and earned a Master of Arts in Theology from the
14 University of Ottawa, Canada in 1971; and
15 WHEREAS, He served as the Provincial Superior of the
16 Midwestern United States Province for the Oblates of Mary
17 Immaculate at St. Paul, Minnesota from 1973 to 1974; and
18 WHEREAS, He was elected Vicar General for the Oblates of
19 Mary Immaculate in 1974 and served in that capacity in Rome
20 until 1986; and
21 WHEREAS, Reverend George earned a second doctorate degree
22 in 1988 and was awarded a Sacred Theology Doctorate (S.T.D.)
23 from the Pontifical University Urbaniana, Rome; and
24 WHEREAS, He was appointed the fifth Bishop of the Diocese
25 of Yakima, Washington on July 10, 1990; and
26 WHEREAS, Bishop George was appointed the ninth Archbishop
27 of Portland, Oregon on April 30, 1996; and
28 WHEREAS, He was chosen by Pope John Paul II to serve as
29 the eighth Archbishop of Chicago and was installed on May 7,

1 1997; and
2 WHEREAS, Archbishop Francis E. George was elevated to the
3 College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II on February 21,
4 1998; and
5 WHEREAS, He has been a spokesman for human life, has
6 worked on behalf of people with disabilities, and is a true
7 Shepherd for Peace; therefore, be it
8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that His
10 Eminence Francis Cardinal George be congratulated and
11 commended for his elevation to the College of Cardinals; and
12 be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to Francis Cardinal George with the respect and
15 regard of the members of this Assembly.
