1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of this Body are happy to recognize
3 organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the
4 well-being of the citizens of this State; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that the Naperville
6 Noon Lions Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary this
7 summer and plans to hold a celebration dinner on June 9, 1998
8 at the Naperville Country Club; and
9 WHEREAS, The Naperville Noon Lions Club was chartered as
10 the "Naperville Lions Club" on July 19, 1948 with 50 original
11 members; meetings were held at the Rafter House every Tuesday
12 at 12:15 p.m.; elected to be the first president was Mr.
13 Joyce N. Lehman, secretary Rev. Harry B. Gordon, and
14 treasurer Joseph A. Bapst; and
15 WHEREAS, Newspaperman Harold White joined the club in
16 November of 1949 and held many committee positions within the
17 club during his 44 years of continuous service; he served as
18 club president in 1976-77, was honored as the 1988 Lion of
19 the Year, and was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship; he
20 received a 40-Year Monarch Key for 40 years of continuous
21 service in 1989; at the time of his death in April of 1993,
22 he left the Lions of Illinois Foundation Endowment Fund a
23 gift of $340,000; and
24 WHEREAS, Fund raising in the 1950s and 1960s included
25 broom and light bulb sales as well as a motion picture
26 travelogue series held at North Central College; and
27 WHEREAS, Charitable contributions topped $8,000 in 1977,
28 in 1988 amounted to more than $14,500, and in 1998 will
29 exceed more than $44,000; recipients this year have included
30 the Lions of Illinois Foundation, Camp Lions, diabetes
31 research, Transcribing for the Blind, local eye and hearing

1 services, Leader Dogs, Little Friends, YMCA, Katherine Manor,
2 and Hesed House; and
3 WHEREAS, Edward J. Moravec is a charter member of the
4 club; he has served in a number of club offices during his 50
5 years in the club; club members recently celebrated his 92nd
6 birthday; and
7 WHEREAS, Naperville Noon Lions Club embodies the spirit
8 of Lionism throughout the world; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 congratulate the Naperville Noon Lions Club on the occasion
12 of its 50th anniversary and hope that it will continue its
13 service for years to come; and be it further
14 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution shall
15 be presented to the President of the Naperville Noon Lions
16 Club and Edward J. Moravec.
