1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, In 1948 the Illinois State Medical Society and
3 the Illinois Agricultural Association jointly created a
4 mechanism to encourage young people seeking to enter medical
5 school to practice in primary care in a rural Illinois
6 location; and
7 WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly recognized this
8 effort and provided for admission recommendations to the
9 University of Illinois College of Medicine for those endorsed
10 by the Rural Illinois Medical Student Assistance Program
11 (RIMSAP) who met admissions criteria and who agreed to
12 practice primary care medicine in rural Illinois for five
13 years following residency; and
14 WHEREAS, RIMSAP has provided low cost loans for those in
15 need of student loans in addition to admission
16 recommendations; and
17 WHEREAS, This program in 1998 celebrates its fiftieth
18 year of service to the citizens of Illinois and to medical
19 students; and
20 WHEREAS, Since its inception nearly 400 physicians from
21 this program have established a practice in rural Illinois,
22 with an additional 200 or so currently in medical school or
23 residency; and
24 WHEREAS, ISMS and the IAA continue to address the medical
25 manpower needs of rural Illinois through this significant
26 program, which begins its second half-century in 1999;
27 therefore, be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
29 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
30 commend the Rural Illinois Medical Student Assistance Program
31 on achieving its fiftieth year of service to the citizens of

1 Illinois, medical students, and the medical profession; and
2 be it further
3 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives hereby
4 expresses appreciation for the students who have completed
5 the program and practice in rural areas, as well as
6 appreciation for those who have served on the RIMSAP board to
7 maintain and continue its success; and be it further
8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
9 the Illinois State Medical Society and the Illinois
10 Agricultural Association with appreciation for the many years
11 of collaborative effort with the hopes that their efforts
12 continue to succeed into the second half of their first
13 century in helping provide medical care to rural Illinoisans.
