1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing died of cancer on January 19,
3 1998, at 47 years of age; and
4 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing is survived by his wife,
5 Dellamarie; his daughters, Kathleen, Megan, and Nora; his
6 sons, Michael and Ryan; his parents, Lois and James Cushing;
7 his three sisters, Barbara, Lynne, and Karen; and his three
8 brothers, Jim, John, and Richard; and
9 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing was mourned by over 1,000
10 people at his funeral mass on January 21, 1998, at St. John
11 Fisher Roman Catholic Church, who remembered him as a
12 remarkable human being who could have been a success in any
13 career that he chose; and
14 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing was a graduate of Brother
15 Rice High School, received his Bachelor of Science degree in
16 administration of justice from Southern Illinois University
17 in 1972, and earned his Master of Arts degree in public
18 service from Governors State University in 1975; he was the
19 author of an assortment of articles on police matters; and
20 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing joined the Chicago Police
21 Department in 1972, became a police sergeant in 1981, and
22 achieved the rank of Lieutenant in 1988, working as a
23 Lieutenant in the narcotics unit since 1990 and previously
24 working in the gang crimes unit; and
25 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing earned the Kathleen Osterman
26 Award for superior public service from the City of Chicago, a
27 Special Award of Honor from the International Narcotics
28 Enforcement Officers Association as well as 165 complimentary
29 letters, 62 honorable mentions, and five department
30 commendations; and
31 WHEREAS, Michael A. Cushing was a loving family man, gave

1 his full devotion to his faith, and fought for the safety and
2 well being of his city throughout his professional life;
3 therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 remember the life of Michael A. Cushing, and we send our
7 sincere sympathy to his family and friends; and be it further
8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to his wife, Dellamarie, and their family.
