1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The United States' embargo against Cuba, imposed
3 35 years ago, has increasingly created physical hardships for
4 the people of Cuba, depriving them of much needed food and
5 medicines and exposing them, including the children, to the
6 effects of malnutrition and other severe health concerns; and
7 WHEREAS, The recent visit to Cuba by Pope John Paul II
8 focused world attention on the needs of the Cuban people and
9 called for mutually beneficial reconciliation and the lifting
10 of the United States' embargo against Cuba; and
11 WHEREAS, Many Cuban-Americans living in the United States
12 as American citizens have families that are being subjected
13 to these hardships and would want to help their families
14 without breaking the laws of the United States; and
15 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois, a leader in education,
16 commerce, agriculture, and technology, stands to benefit from
17 the potential economic development and trade that could be
18 established with the island nation of Cuba; and
19 WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States is currently
20 considering HR 1951 and S 1391, which seek to lift the
21 embargo against Cuba for the purpose of making available
22 humanitarian aid in the form of food and medicines; therefore
23 be it
24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
25 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
26 urge the passage and enactment of HR 1951 and S 1391 to lift
27 the United States' embargo for humanitarian reasons and that
28 the delivery of food and medicine to the Cuban people be
29 allowed; and that such an adjustment in our foreign policy
30 reflects America's humanitarianism that transcends political
31 ideology; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be sent to the
2 President of the United States, the Speaker of the United
3 States House of Representatives, the President Pro Tempore of
4 the United States Senate, and each member of the Illinois
5 congressional delegation.
