1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Illinois House of Representatives wish to
3 congratulate Chicago Cubs' outfielder Sammy Sosa on a
4 historic season; and
5 WHEREAS, Sammy Sosa ended the 1998 baseball season with
6 66 home runs, beating the old Major League record of 61 set
7 by Roger Maris; Sammy Sosa led the Major Leagues in R.B.I.'s
8 with 158 this season; in June he set a Major League record
9 when he hit 20 home runs in one month; and
10 WHEREAS, Sammy Sosa is from San Pedro de Macoris,
11 Dominican Republic; Sammy and his wife, Sonia, live there
12 with their four children: Keysha, Kenia, Sammy Jr., and
13 Michael; and
14 WHEREAS, In addition to the home run record, Sammy Sosa
15 went over two hundred stolen bases for his career this
16 season; in 1993 he became the only player in Chicago Cubs
17 history to have a 30-homer/30-steal campaign, repeating the
18 feat in 1995; Sammy Sosa also had 20/20 seasons in 1994 and
19 1997, becoming only the fourth Cubs player to do so; and
20 WHEREAS, Sammy Sosa came to the Chicago Cubs via the
21 Chicago White Sox in a trade for outfielder George Bell;
22 Sammy Sosa is currently under contract with the Chicago Cubs
23 through 2001, with a mutual option for 2002; and
24 WHEREAS, Together with the City of Chicago, the State of
25 Illinois is proud to recognize Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs
26 for his achievements in baseball this season; he has brought
27 hope and excitement to millions of people in Chicago,
28 Illinois, the nation, and the world; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
31 congratulate Sammy Sosa on his incredible 1998 baseball

1 season; we look forward to watching his continuing career
2 with the Chicago Cubs; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
4 presented to Sammy Sosa and the Chicago Cubs ball club.
