1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate R.C. Smith upon his
4 retirement as a member of the Macon County Board; and
5 WHEREAS, R.C. Smith has been a Democratic Precinct
6 Committeeman since 1958; he served as Vice Chairman of the
7 Macon County Democratic Central Committee for 8 years; he was
8 elected to the Macon County Board in 1980 and has served
9 faithfully ever since that day; in 1985 and 1986 he served as
10 Chairman of the Board; for 6 years he served as the Vice
11 Chairman of the Board; R.C. Smith is currently senior member
12 of the Board and Dean of the County Board; and
13 WHEREAS, R.C. Smith is a past trustee of the Long Creek
14 Fire Protection District; he is a past member of the Macon
15 County 708 Mental Health Board; he is the former assessor for
16 Long Creek Township; he is currently serving as Long Creek
17 Township Clerk, a position he was elected to in 1997; and
18 WHEREAS, R.C. Smith began working for the Wabash Railroad
19 in 1951, moving on to the Norfolk and Western Railroad, and
20 then on to the Norfolk-Southern Railroad, retiring in 1989;
21 Mr. Smith was named the Executive Director of the Decatur
22 Area Labor Management Committee in 1990, serving in that
23 position until retiring in 1997; and
24 WHEREAS, R.C. Smith served in the United States Air Force
25 from 1952 to 1956; he is a member and Deacon of Tabernacle
26 Baptist Church, and has been a Sunday School teacher for over
27 35 years; and
28 WHEREAS, R.C. Smith married Wanda Jones in 1964; they are
29 the parents of Patty Rodgers, Randy Smith, and Bryan Smith;
30 they are the proud grandparents of two; and
31 WHEREAS, R.C. Smith was elected as Mt. Zion Township

1 Supervisor in 1971, becoming the first Democrat elected in
2 over 20 years, but was ruled ineligible to serve after his
3 election; his great grandmother, Americus Stackhouse, came by
4 covered wagon from Sarcoxie, Missouri to Long Creek Township
5 in 1861; therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
8 congratulate R.C. Smith on a job well done; for his
9 dedication and his hard work in Macon County we say thanks;
10 and be it further
11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12 presented to R.C. Smith, along with our sincere regards and
13 best wishes for his future.
