1 AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1598
2 AMENDMENT NO. . Amend Senate Bill 1598 on page 1, by
3 replacing lines 1 and 2 with the following:
4 "AN ACT to amend the School Code by changing Sections
5 10-20.12a and 10-22.21b."; and
6 on page 1, by replacing line 6 with the following:
7 "Sections 10-20.12a and 10-22.21b as follows:"; and
8 on page 2, immediately after line 14, by inserting the
9 following:
10 "(105 ILCS 5/10-22.21b) (from Ch. 122, par. 10-22.21b)
11 Sec. 10-22.21b. Administering medication. To provide
12 for the administration of medication to students. It shall
13 be the policy of the State of Illinois that the
14 administration of medication to students during regular
15 school hours and during school-related activities should be
16 discouraged unless absolutely necessary for the critical
17 health and well-being of the student. Under no circumstances
18 shall teachers or other non-administrative school employees,
19 except certified school nurses, be required to administer
20 medication to students. This Section shall not prohibit a
21 school district from adopting guidelines for
22 self-administration of medication by students. Because the

1 respiratory medical condition of asthma requires immediate
2 self-administration of medication by students, school
3 districts are encouraged to adopt reasonable guidelines which
4 permit such self-medication when necessary. This Section
5 shall not prohibit any school employee from providing
6 emergency assistance to students.
