1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn
3 of the death of Ms. Evelyn Mae Jackson of Chicago on November
4 6, 1996; and
5 WHEREAS, She was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on
6 May 26, 1910; the family moved to Chicago in 1918; and
7 WHEREAS, A student with outstanding academic achievement,
8 Evelyn Jackson graduated from Parker Senior High School,
9 Crane Junior College, Chicago Teachers College, Northwestern
10 University, and Chicago Musical College; and
11 WHEREAS, With a love of music, Ms. Jackson enjoyed a
12 career as a concert singer and studied under Madame Gardeani;
13 her career was cut short upon the death of Madame Gardeani;
14 and
15 WHEREAS, Evelyn Jackson taught at John D. Shoop
16 Elementary School in Morgan Park; music had been removed from
17 the curriculum of Chicago's elementary schools and Ms.
18 Jackson, with the permission of the administration and
19 parents of the students, met the children at six o'clock in
20 the morning to teach and share her love of music; and
21 WHEREAS, As a teacher, Evelyn Jackson served as a
22 positive role model to several prominent individuals,
23 including Senator Emil Jones, Jr.; the former President of
24 the Chicago Teachers Union, Jackie Vaughn; and the first
25 African-American Principal of Morgan Park High School, Earl
26 Bryant; and
27 WHEREAS, After leaving the teaching profession, Ms.
28 Jackson devoted ten years to the service of God as a leader
29 of her church; and
30 WHEREAS, She exemplified the highest standards and leaves

1 a legacy which will long be remembered; therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
3 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow and regret
4 the death of Ms. Evelyn Mae Jackson and extend our sincere
5 condolences to her family and friends; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to her sister, Esther Jackson, as an expression of
8 our respect.
