1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3 to hear of the death of Albert Shanker; and
4 WHEREAS, Albert Shanker was a graduate of the University
5 of Illinois, and completed post graduate work at Columbia
6 University; and
7 WHEREAS, Mr. Shanker taught mathematics in the New York
8 City schools before becoming a leader in the United
9 Federation of Teachers of New York City; and
10 WHEREAS, From 1964 to 1986, Mr. Shanker served as the
11 President of the United Federation of Teachers of New York
12 City; from 1974 until his death, he had served as the
13 President of the 900,000 member strong American Federation of
14 Teachers union; Mr. Shanker served as the Senior
15 Vice-President of the AFL-CIO Executive Council since 1973;
16 as well as serving as a member of the International Rescue
17 Committee; and
18 WHEREAS, Mr. Shanker believed in enacting strong academic
19 and conduct standards on students in order to improve the
20 public schools; he also supported giving independence to
21 charter schools within the public schools, so that the
22 schools could become models for reform; and
23 WHEREAS, Albert Shanker is survived by his loving wife,
24 Edith; his sons, Carl Sabath, Adam Shanker, and Michael
25 Shanker; one daughter, Jennie Shanker; one sister, Pearl
26 Harris; and his three grandchildren Adrian, Olivia, and
27 Jeremy; therefore, be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
29 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his
30 family and many colleagues, the death of ALbert Shanker of
31 New York City; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to the family of Albert Shanker.
