1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3 to learn of the death of Dr. Wayne Van Gelderen Sr. of
4 Downers Grove, Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Dr. Van Gelderen recently celebrated his
6 fiftieth anniversary in the Baptist ministry; and
7 WHEREAS, Dr. Van Gelderen was born in Miami, Florida; in
8 1947 he graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville,
9 South Carolina, with a Bachelor's degree and a Master's
10 degree; and
11 WHEREAS, Dr. Van Gelderen was honored with a Doctorate in
12 Divinity from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1966, and
13 was voted alumnus of the year by Bob Jones University alumni
14 in 1980; and
15 WHEREAS, Dr. Van Gelderen served as pastor of churches in
16 Florida, Michigan, and Colorado; in 1966 he came to Chicago
17 where he became pastor of the historic Marquette Manor
18 Baptist Church on Chicago's southwest side; in 1974 Dr. Van
19 Gelderen moved the congregation to a satellite church that
20 had previously been established in Downers Grove, Illinois
21 after the church was destroyed by fire; it was at this
22 location that the congregation grew from 50 members to over
23 800; and
24 WHEREAS, Dr. Van Gelderen is survived by a family that
25 have also dedicated themselves to ministry: his sons Wayne,
26 Jr., Jim, and John; his daughters and their husbands, Joy and
27 Gary Hirth and Joanna and Mark Gillmore; all five men are
28 ministers in the Baptist church; he is also survived by nine
29 grandchildren, one brother and one sister; therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
31 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the loss of Dr. Wayne

1 Van Gelderen Sr. of Downers Grove, Illinois, and offer our
2 sincere condolences to his family and congregation; and be it
3 further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to the family of Dr. Wayne Van Gelderen, Sr.
