1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, One of the issues before the United States
3 Congress is whether the National Endowment for the Arts, the
4 agency that supports state art councils and local arts groups
5 and community projects, will continue to receive money
6 appropriated from the federal budget; and
7 WHEREAS, Without federal funding, many ballet companies,
8 theaters, operas, symphonies, and museums may be forced to
9 reduce their availability to the public and possibly cease
10 operating; and
11 WHEREAS, This funding contributes to the health and
12 preservation of our cultural heritage while recognizing and
13 giving a voice to the cultural diversity inherent to this
14 State and nation; and
15 WHEREAS, Already, in 1997, Illinois received over
16 $2,800,000 in grants given to organizations large and small,
17 from the Chicago Civic Opera to the Glen Ellyn Children's
18 Chorus; and
19 WHEREAS, Citizens of the United States and our society as
20 a whole benefit from the broad dissemination of the various
21 arts; and
22 WHEREAS, Federal funding, together with support from
23 corporations and individuals, has been responsible for the
24 evolution of the arts; therefore, be it
25 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
26 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Congress of the
27 United States to appropriate sufficient funds to continue to
28 fund the National Endowment for the Arts at the present
29 levels of funding; and be it further
30 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be

1 forwarded to House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Representative
2 Donald Payne, and to each member of the Illinois
3 congressional delegation.
