1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, John Porter has a remarkable career of public
3 service, including 20 years in the United States Congress;
4 and
5 WHEREAS, Before his election to the United States
6 Congress, John Porter served as a State Representative in the
7 Illinois General Assembly, representing Illinois' 1st
8 Legislative District from 1973 to 1979; and
9 WHEREAS, John Porter represents the 10th Congressional
10 District in Illinois with great distinction and has earned a
11 reputation for being a thoughtful, independent Congressman
12 who truly represents the views of the citizens of his
13 district; and
14 WHEREAS, John Porter founded and co-chaired the
15 Congressional Human Rights Caucus to identify and combat
16 abuses of human rights around the globe; and
17 WHEREAS, Serving as Chairman of the Labor, Health, and
18 Human Services and Education Appropriations subcommittees,
19 John Porter led efforts to dramatically increase funding for
20 biomedical research through the National Institutes of
21 Health; and
22 WHEREAS, This research advances efforts to improve human
23 health and to fight cancer, diabetes, AIDS, and other deadly
24 diseases; and
25 WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Congressman John Porter
26 has distinguished himself as an outstanding leader and
27 statesman who has demonstrated his ability to work with
28 colleagues of divergent views to help find the consensus
29 needed in a democracy; therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
2 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we proudly recognize John
3 Porter for his tremendous contributions, congratulate him for
4 his achievements, and convey on behalf of the people of the
5 State of Illinois our deepest appreciation and best wishes;
6 and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to Congressman John Porter with our sincere
9 regards.
