1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are
3 happy to recognize individuals who have made outstanding
4 contributions to the well-being of the citizens of this
5 State; and
6 WHEREAS, Manhattan, Illinois Police Chief William Harris
7 has announced his retirement from the department; and
8 WHEREAS, William Harris has been on the police department
9 of the Village of Manhattan for over 33 years; he began his
10 career on October 20, 1965, when he was hired as a part-time
11 officer while working full-time at Caterpillar Tractor
12 Company in Joliet; and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Harris served in the security division of
14 the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960; and
15 WHEREAS, He took over as "acting chief" on June 1, 1969;
16 during this time, he was a volunteer for the Manhattan Fire
17 Department; on January 1, 1970, William Harris was hired as
18 police chief for the Village of Manhattan; and
19 WHEREAS, Chief Harris has earned the respect of all who
20 have come to know him; therefore, be it
21 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
22 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
23 we congratulate Chief William Harris as he retires from the
24 Village of Manhattan Police Department and applaud his fine
25 work; and be it further
26 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to him as an expression of our esteem.
