1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Robert H. Dunlap of Monmouth received the
3 Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions when he was a
4 Captain with the United States Marines on Iwo Jima on
5 February 21, 1945 during World War II; and
6 WHEREAS, Captain Dunlap received the medal for
7 conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk
8 of his life and beyond the call of duty as commanding officer
9 in action against enemy Japanese forces; and
10 WHEREAS, Defying uninterrupted blasts of Japanese
11 artillery, mortar fire, and machine gun fire, Captain Dunlap
12 led his troops from low ground upward toward the steep cliffs
13 where the enemy rained down shrapnel and bullets until his
14 progress was temporarily halted; determined not to yield, he
15 crawled alone, took observation at the base of the cliff,
16 located the enemy guns, and returned to his own lines where
17 he relayed the vital information to supporting artillery and
18 naval gunfire units; and
19 WHEREAS, For 2 days and 2 nights, he worked without
20 respite under constant enemy fire, skillfully directing a
21 smashing bombardment against the Japanese positions; and
22 WHEREAS, Captain Dunlap's extraordinary heroism, at the
23 risk of his life are in keeping with the highest traditions
24 of the military service; and
25 WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is proud of people like
26 Robert H. Dunlap, who risked his life in the service of his
27 country; therefore, be it
28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
30 we congratulate Robert H. Dunlap in receiving the
31 Congressional Medal of Honor; that we commend him for his

1 valor and courage; and that we wish him all the best of luck
2 in the future; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to Robert H. Dunlap as an expression of our esteem.
