1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to send their sincere condolences to the
4 family and friends of Lloyd D. Solomon of Taylorville, who
5 recently passed away; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon's teaching career began in Holben
7 School, a small school north of Taylorville; Mr. Solomon had
8 received a two-year teaching certificate from Illinois State
9 University and was teaching his second year when he was
10 drafted into the Air Force during World War II; Mr. Solomon
11 served four years and three months in the United States Air
12 Force, and upon his return received his degree in elementary
13 education from Illinois State University; and
14 WHEREAS, In 1945 Lloyd Solomon took time out from
15 education studies to marry his wife, Erma on July 20; and
16 WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon went on to teach grades 5, 6, 7, and
17 8 at Moroa School, followed by his first year at Hewitt
18 School in Taylorville; he then spent four years teaching
19 grades 5 and 6 at Owaneco School, where he also served as
20 principal; Mr. Solomon next accepted a teaching position at
21 the Taylorville Junior High School, which allowed him time to
22 also take classes and receive his Masters degree in
23 administration from the University of Illinois; and
24 WHEREAS, Following two years of study, Mr. Solomon
25 returned to Hewitt School and became the school's principal
26 until his retirement in 1981; in 1969 the school moved to a
27 new building and changed its name to South School; and
28 WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon was well respected and liked by all
29 his students and the faculty of the school; in 1991 he was
30 chosen to receive the Christian County Retired Teacher of the
31 Year award; the award was presented to Mr. Solomon for his

1 work as an educator and administrator, and also for his
2 continuing work in education after his retirement; and
3 WHEREAS, Following his retirement Mr. Solomon worked with
4 the Retired Teachers Association (RTA), serving as president,
5 and also serving on the Legislative Committee and the State
6 Foundation Board for Retired Teachers; Mr. Solomon also
7 taught G.E.D. classes for adults wanting to receive their
8 high school equivalency diploma; and
9 WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon was a member of the First Baptist
10 Church in Taylorville, where he led a Sunday School class and
11 sang in the church choir; he also held numerous offices and
12 leadership positions in the church; and
13 WHEREAS, Mr. Solomon also served on the Board of AARP as
14 their Legislative Chairman; he was a dedicated donor to the
15 American Red Cross Blood Bank; he was a member of the
16 Taylorville Optimist Club; he served on the Omnibudsman
17 Program for nursing home residents, and assisted in teaching
18 the "55 Alive" classes to senior citizens, enabling them to
19 become better drivers; and
20 WHEREAS, Lloyd Solomon is survived by his loving wife,
21 Erma; his daughters, Dottie Francine Solomon-Bettcher, Diane
22 Marie Solomon, and Carol Elaine Bentsen; his four
23 granddaughters; and many former faculty members, school
24 staff, and students who will always remember him for the kind
25 way he had about him; therefore, be it
26 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
27 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
28 we honor the memory of Mr. Lloyd Solomon of Taylorville,
29 Illinois; to his family, friends, and all that knew him, we
30 wish only the best in this time of loss; and be it further
31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
