1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Captain Edwin J. Korczynski's life has
3 demonstrated selfless acts of heroism and volunteerism; and
4 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski has been a dedicated member
5 of the Boy/Explorer Scouts, American Red Cross Disaster
6 Volunteer Team, Chicago Park District, Captain of the Life
7 Guard Corps at Foster Beach, Pilots for Hospitalized
8 Children, and Crisis Counselor; and
9 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's accurate and quick
10 decision making ability earned him the esteemed honor "1960
11 Life Guard of the Year"; and
12 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski is Chicago born and bred and
13 is proud of his Polish ancestry; he graduated from Henry D.
14 Lloyd Elementary, Lane Technical High School, and earned a
15 Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northern
16 Illinois University at DeKalb; and
17 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's courage and dedication was
18 clearly acknowledged when our nation called during the
19 Vietnam crisis, by enlisting in the United States Marine
20 Corps, serving in the 39th Officers Candidate Class of 1965
21 in Quantico, Virginia; and
22 WHEREAS, As a Commercial Airline Pilot flying for Eastern
23 Airlines, Midway Airlines, and America West Airlines he has
24 logged over 14,000 turbo-jet aircraft hours completing five
25 world circles; and
26 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's thousands of volunteer
27 hours serving as a Disaster Assistant Team member earned him
28 a number of "Special Recognition" Award's presented by the
29 American Red Cross Chicago Chapter; and
30 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's proudest accomplishment

1 came when he demonstrated his patriotism for a second time
2 when our country was at war during Desert Shield/Desert Storm
3 as a Pilot/Flight Engineer; Korczynski participated in the
4 Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) operation, where civilian
5 airlines are used for left capability; in volunteering as a
6 CRAF Pilot, Pilot Korczynski transported Marines, Medical
7 Battalions, and supplies vital to the Kuwaiti liberation
8 effort; and
9 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski, then an American West Pilot
10 as a Pilot Crew Member flying a Boeing 747 series 200
11 completed twenty-five CRAF/MAC missions during the Persian
12 Gulf War; and
13 WHEREAS, Pilot/Fighter Engineer Edwin J. Korczynski was
14 subsequently recognized in the Congressional Record dated 13
15 May 1992 by Congressman William O. Lipinski; quoting a small
16 portion of the record, "Mr. Speaker, I rise to salute Edwin
17 J. Korczynski. His bravery, courage, and aeronautical
18 abilities enabled him to serve our country in the Persian
19 Gulf War with the highest level of distinction. Although he
20 is an honorably discharged United States Marine, Korczynski
21 was not an activated reservist during this conflict. Instead
22 he volunteered to further demonstrate his commitment to
23 democracy. Mr. Speaker, as we reflect on the war in the
24 Persian Gulf, we must consider the contributions of
25 individuals such as Edwin J. Korczynski. I urge my
26 colleagues to join me in recognizing Mr. Korczynski and
27 others like him for the tremendous role they played during
28 the Persian Gulf War."; and
29 WHEREAS, Pilot/Fighter Engineer Edwin J. Korczynski was
30 awarded the Civilian Desert Shield/Desert Storm Medal for
31 distinguished service by the Department of Defense on 15
32 April 1993; and

1 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's volunteerism continued
2 after Desert Shield/Desert Storm as Captain, United States
3 Air Force, CAP (Civil Air Patrol) sharing his time and
4 knowledge of aviation; additionally he shared the same
5 serving the Air Explorer Program of the Boy Scouts of
6 America; and
7 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's volunteerism and extensive
8 knowledge of the Scouting program enabled him to co-sponsor
9 the formation of the Colonel Thomas Day Memorial Explorer
10 Post #777, of the Boy/Explorer Scouts of America; and
11 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's extensive knowledge of
12 Civil Air Patrol Programs, aviation knowledge, search and
13 rescue techniques, Emergency Management (FEMA/IEMA), and
14 anti-terrorism earned him a promotion to Squadron Commander
15 of the United States Air Force, CAP Composite Squadron #11282
16 of Flight Group #22 in the Illinois Wing; and
17 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's volunteerism as an
18 American West Pilot serving the Pilot Corps in the capacity
19 of Vice Chairman of Flight Security/Aircraft Rescue and
20 fire-fighting earned him the appointment of active committees
21 member of Aviation Rule Making Committee #62527 for the
22 rewrite of a Federal Aviation Rule (Airport Security); and
23 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's thousands of volunteer
24 hours rallied thousands to contribute both time and funds for
25 the restoration of the statue in Savanna, Georgia
26 acknowledging the great American Revolutionary War hero
27 General Casimir Pulaski, the "Father of the American
28 Calvary"; and
29 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski has received hundreds of
30 letters written into the Congressional Record and recognition
31 citing his heroism, patriotism, volunteerism, and his efforts
32 to his country and community; and

1 WHEREAS, Edwin J. Korczynski's proudest achievement is
2 his love of family, especially his five beautiful daughters,
3 Ediane M., Kimberly A., Elizabeth A., Bethany A., and Megan
4 M.; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we acknowledge the unselfish contributions that Edwin J.
8 Korczynski has made to his country, his city, his fellow
9 neighbor, and his family; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to Edwin J. Korczynski.
