1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of James
4 Zacharias of Winnetka, Illinois, who recently passed away;
5 and
6 WHEREAS, James Zacharias was born in Oak Park, Illinois;
7 he graduated from the University of Chicago College, and
8 graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1935;
9 he entered the United States Army in 1942, serving in World
10 War II; and
11 WHEREAS, Before his military service, Mr. Zacharias
12 practiced law for 3 years and operated a plastics company;
13 after his tour of duty ended he and his brother, Richard,
14 operated Precision Plating Co., an electroplating firm, where
15 he retired from in 1989; and
16 WHEREAS, Mr. Zacharias and his brother teamed up with the
17 Stefanos family, creators of the Dove Bar, to introduce the
18 chocolate and ice cream confection to a national market; and
19 WHEREAS, James Zacharias had served on the Illinois ACLU
20 board of directors since 1983, and on the executive committee
21 since 1990; in 1994 he became the chairman of the advisory
22 committee; Mr. Zacharias was a past chairman of the Illinois
23 Commission on Children and the John Howard Association, a
24 prison reform group; he was the first chair of the Cook
25 County Special Bail Project, and created the Zacharias Center
26 in Gurnee for the Lake County Council Against Sexual Assault;
27 and
28 WHEREAS, His compassion, intellect, and idealism were
29 selflessly shared with those who often did not have a
30 powerful public voice; and
31 WHEREAS, James Zacharias is survived by his wife, Bobette

1 Blum Zacharias; his son, Jamie; his daughters, Joan Dorothy
2 Zacharias and Laurie Rose Zacharias-Smith; his grandchild,
3 and his great-grandchild; therefore, be it
4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6 we mourn, along with all that knew him, the death of James
7 Zacharias of Winnetka, Illinois; and be it further
8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9 presented to the family of James Zacharias.
