1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coffey is a native of Racine,
3 Wisconsin, and graduated from Marquette University in 1951;
4 and
5 WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coffey served as Springfield bureau
6 chief for United Press International before joining the
7 Chicago Daily News in 1961; and
8 WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coffey worked at the Chicago Daily
9 News as a reporter, national correspondent, assistant
10 managing editor, and Washington, D.C. bureau chief, and spent
11 more than ten years abroad in Europe and Asia as a Daily News
12 foreign correspondent; and
13 WHEREAS, While at the Chicago Daily News, Raymond R.
14 Coffey won two National Headliner Awards for his coverage of
15 the Vietnam War and the civil war in Biafra; he was also
16 honored for his foreign reporting with an Overseas Press Club
17 Award; and
18 WHEREAS, When the Chicago Daily News ceased publication
19 in 1978, Raymond R. Coffey joined the Chicago Tribune as a
20 member of its Washington, D.C. bureau and became the bureau
21 chief in 1980; returning to Chicago in 1986, where he served
22 at the Tribune as associate editor, columnist, and a member
23 of the editorial board; and
24 WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coffey came to the Chicago Sun-Times
25 in 1987 as managing editor; he is a columnist and a member of
26 the editorial board; and
27 WHEREAS, In 1991 Raymond R. Coffey was among veteran
28 journalists inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of
29 Fame; this honor was given by the Chicago Headline Club, the
30 local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists; and

1 WHEREAS, On January 31, 1993, Raymond R. Coffey became
2 the Page 3 columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, offering
3 commentary four days a week from an unmistakably Chicago
4 point of view; and
5 WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coffey was voted Irishman of the Year
6 by the Emerald Society of the Illinois Irish American Police
7 Association because of his belief in the rights of the common
8 man and his ability to articulate these rights in a
9 reasonable and rational way; and
10 WHEREAS, Raymond R. Coffey has been a champion for the
11 vulnerable, fighting for the rights of abused and neglected
12 children, which has led to major reform of our State child
13 welfare system; and
14 WHEREAS, On December 31, 1999, Raymond R. Coffey will
15 retire from the Chicago Sun-Times; therefore, be it
16 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18 we congratulate Raymond R. Coffey on his many years of
19 dedicated service in the field of journalism; and we thank
20 him for his many years of dedication to the people of the
21 City of Chicago and the State of Illinois; and be it further
22 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
23 presented to Raymond R. Coffey.
