1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor milestones in the lives
4 of citizens of the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Edmund B. Thornton will be honored by the Canal
6 Corridor Association for his leadership, and for his hard
7 work with the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage
8 Corridor; and
9 WHEREAS, Edmund B. Thornton was a founding member of the
10 Canal Corridor Association in 1982; he was the first chairman
11 of the federally appointed Illinois and Michigan Canal
12 Heritage Corridor Commission in 1984, and is currently
13 serving once more as the Commission's chairman; and
14 WHEREAS, Edmund B. Thornton chaired the Commission's
15 Sesquicentennial Committee; the Committee brought together
16 hundreds of partners for a year-long celebration,
17 commemorating the 150th anniversary of the I & M Canal; and
18 WHEREAS, Edmund B. Thornton was Chairman and CEO of
19 Ottawa Silica Company; he chaired the national Parks
20 Centennial Committee; he founded the Illinois Historic Sites
21 Advisory Council; he served as Vice-Chair of the Nature of
22 Illinois Foundation; and he was appointed to the Illinois
23 Nature Preserves Commission and the Illinois State Museum
24 Board; and
25 WHEREAS, Edmund B. Thornton has been instrumental in
26 preserving the Reddick Mansion in Ottawa and the I & M Canal
27 Warehouse in Utica; he commissioned a unique earth sculpture
28 in Buffalo Rock State Park, and led the preservation of the
29 Grand Village of the Illinois; therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
31 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1 we congratulate Edmund B. Thornton on receiving this well
2 deserved honor; and we thank him for his dedication and
3 diligent efforts, keeping the rich history of Illinois alive
4 for future generations; and be it further
5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to Edmund B. Thornton.
