1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor milestones in the
4 existence of service organizations within this State; and
5 WHEREAS, The Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers
6 was founded in Evanston, Illinois, in 1900 as the Illinois
7 Congress of Mothers, and became the fourth state to join the
8 National Congress of Parents and Teachers; and
9 WHEREAS, On May 30, 2000, the Illinois Congress of
10 Parents and Teachers will celebrate 100 years of doing the
11 following:
12 a. promoting the welfare of children and youth;
13 b. raising the standards of home life;
14 c. seeking adequate laws for the care and protection
15 of children and youth;
16 d. promoting parent involvement in the education of
17 children; and
18 e. seeking the highest advantages in physical,
19 mental, social, and spiritual education through united
20 efforts between professionals and the general public; and
21 WHEREAS, The Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers
22 has provided the leadership to enable its membership to plan
23 and provide programs to benefit children and youth through
24 cultural arts experiences; field trips; partnering with
25 teachers, administrators and school boards to help develop
26 policy and make decisions affecting curriculum; discipline;
27 textbook selection; school safety; and adequate financial
28 support for public education; and
29 WHEREAS, The symbol of the PTA is the oak tree
30 demonstrating the strength of the branches and twigs
31 representing districts, council, and local units; therefore,

1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 we congratulate the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers
4 on the occasion of their 100th anniversary; and be it further
5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers.
