1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere has served as the
3 Secretary-Treasurer of the Illinois AFL-CIO since 1993; and
4 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere has been elected president
5 of the State Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, which represents
6 one million Illinois workers; and
7 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere has achieved a milestone for
8 Illinois women by serving as the first woman president of the
9 State Federation; and
10 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere was a former classroom
11 teacher and has served on all levels of the labor movement
12 from president of her local union in Madison to statewide
13 vice president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, and
14 continues to be a member in the American Federation of
15 Teachers Local 763; and
16 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere has a bachelor's degree in
17 elementary education and a master's degree in urban
18 education, both from Southern Illinois
19 University-Edwardsville; and
20 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere has played a key role in the
21 Democratic Party as a delegate to the Democratic National
22 Convention, as the director of the Illinois Democratic
23 Coordinated Campaign in 1990 and 1992, and currently as a
24 member of the Democratic National Committee; and
25 WHEREAS, Margaret Blackshere has an ongoing commitment to
26 public service by serving on various boards and councils
27 including the United Way of Illinois, Voices for Illinois
28 Children, White House Commission on Presidential Scholars,
29 and the Illinois Skills Standard & Credentialing Council;
30 therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 we congratulate Margaret Blackshere for her achievement as
4 the new president of the Illinois Federation of Labor,
5 AFL-CIO; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to Margaret Blackshere.
