1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were
3 saddened to learn of the death of Ira Marks of Hyde Park and
4 Ft. Myers, Florida, on Wednesday, March 15, 2000; and
5 WHEREAS, Mr. Marks' career in the jewelry business
6 touched six decades; he founded Whitehall Co., which caused
7 the family business, Marks Brothers Jewelry, to grow from a
8 chain of seven Chicago stores to more than 150 shops in
9 regional malls nationwide; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Marks was a pioneer in the jewelry industry
11 making fine jewelry available to the common man; he served as
12 the company's president and CEO; he was known for his
13 tolerance, loyalty, and ethics; he retired in the late 1980s;
14 and
15 WHEREAS, Mr. Marks was a veteran of the United States
16 Army during World War II, he was wounded while leading his
17 troops on a charge in Italy, earning a Bronze Star and a
18 Purple Heart for his actions; and
19 WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Hyde Park, Mr. Marks
20 loved the community and was active there in urban renewal
21 projects and independent politics; he served as a Director of
22 the Harper Court Foundation, the Chicago Child Care Society,
23 and Spertus College, and he was an active member of the
24 Chicago Sinai Congregation; and
25 WHEREAS, The passing of Ira Marks will be deeply felt by
26 his family and friends, especially his wife, Janina; his
27 sons, Peter, Daniel, and Paul; his stepson, Sigi Nagys; his
28 six grandchildren; and his three step-grandchildren;
29 therefore, be it
30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
31 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

1 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Ira Marks and
2 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and
3 be it further
4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to his widow, Janina Marks.
