1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were
3 saddened to learn of the death of Edward H. Levi on Tuesday,
4 March 7, 2000, at his home in Chicago; and
5 WHEREAS, The son and grandson of rabbis, Edward Levi was
6 born in Chicago on June 26, 1911, the son of Elsa and Gerson
7 Levi; and
8 WHEREAS, Edward Levi first attended kindergarten classes
9 at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools at the age of
10 five; he remained at the University's laboratory schools
11 through grade school and high school, then attended college,
12 graduate school, and law school at the University; and
13 WHEREAS, During World War II, Edward Levi worked as a
14 special assistant in the United States attorney general's
15 office; in 1945, he returned to Chicago as a law professor at
16 the University of Chicago; and
17 WHEREAS, In 1949, he wrote "An Introduction to Legal
18 Reasoning", a work that continues to be assigned reading at
19 many of the nation's law schools; in 1950, he was appointed
20 Dean of the Law School, the first Jewish person to hold that
21 position at a major United States university; and
22 WHEREAS, In 1962, he became the University of Chicago's
23 first Provost; in 1968, he became the first alumnus of the
24 University to be named the school's President, a position he
25 held until 1975; and
26 WHEREAS, Mr. Levi was known among college and university
27 administrators for his handling of civil disturbances on the
28 Chicago campus in 1968; unlike other administrators at some
29 colleges, he did not call in outside authorities when more
30 than 400 students occupied his office for more than two
31 weeks; he waited them out, and later suspended and dismissed

1 many of their leaders; and
2 WHEREAS, Edward Levi was appointed United States Attorney
3 General by President Gerald Ford after the Watergate scandal
4 in 1975 and through his towering integrity restored
5 confidence in a department whose credibility had been eroded;
6 and
7 WHEREAS, Edward Levi was a loving husband and father who
8 had a great warmth for family as well as an incredibly dry
9 wit and a brilliant intellect; and
10 WHEREAS, Edward Levi's passing will be deeply felt by his
11 colleagues, his friends, and his family, especially his wife,
12 Kate Sulzberger Hecht Levi; his sons, John, David, and
13 Michael; his grandchildren; and his brother, Harry;
14 therefore, be it
15 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Edward H. Levi
18 and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends;
19 and be it further
20 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to his widow, Kate.
