1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, It was with great sorrow that the members of the
3 Illinois House of Representatives heard of the death of Jean
4 Chevalier of Batavia, Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, Jean Chevalier was born in Columbus, Ohio on
6 October 18, 1923; he moved to Batavia 16 years ago as a
7 computer designer and engineer for Bell Labs in Naperville;
8 and
9 WHEREAS, Jean Chevalier retired in 1988, and went on to
10 serve on the Batavia Council on Aging for several years; he
11 also served on the board of Two Rivers Head Start, and was
12 president of the Batavia Retired Senior Volunteer Program
13 (RSVP); through his work with RSVP he delivered meals to
14 senior citizens, helped fill out government forms, and worked
15 on a program to help senior citizens on Medicare pay for
16 their prescriptions; because of his hard work with senior
17 citizens, he was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of
18 the Year Award in 1996; and
19 WHEREAS, Jean Chevalier organized a trip to Grand Forks,
20 North Dakota in March of 1998 to help rebuild flooded homes;
21 and he and a group of 50 volunteers from the Chicago area
22 traveled to Grand Forks and spent five days working at their
23 own expense; and
24 WHEREAS, Jean Chevalier was a graduate of Ohio State
25 University; he served in the United States Navy during World
26 War II; and he was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where
27 he served on the congregational council and was chairman of
28 the service committee; and
29 WHEREAS, Jean Chevalier enjoyed bicycling, camping,
30 cross-country skiing, fishing, backpacking, canoeing,
31 traveling with his wife, and taking nature photographs; this

1 remarkable volunteer who gave of his own time is survived by
2 his loving wife, Nita; therefore, be it
3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5 we mourn, along with all that were touched by him, the death
6 of Jean Chevalier of Batavia, Illinois; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to Mrs. Nita Chevalier.
