1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were
3 saddened to learn of the tragic death of Raul Esparza of
4 Pilsen in a house fire on January 17, 2000; and
5 WHEREAS, Raul Esparza Arellano was born in Florencia
6 Zacatecas, Mexico, on June 14, 1922; he came to the United
7 States in the 1930s; and
8 WHEREAS, Raul Esparza married Maria Rodriguez Gonzalez on
9 April 1, 1951; he settled in Chicago in the early 1960s,
10 working for American Cold Storage and moved to the Pilsen
11 community; and
12 WHEREAS, Raul Esparza became active in the Providence of
13 God Parish and founded the Guadalupana Society in 1964, a
14 group that is dedicated to honoring the Virgin Mary; and
15 WHEREAS, Raul Esparza was elected to the School Board as
16 President in the 1970s and played roles in the re-enactment
17 of the passion of Jesus; and
18 WHEREAS, Active in his community as he raised his
19 children, Raul Esparza worked to help form the organization
20 of Pilsen neighbors and fought to build Benito Juarez High
21 School; he was active in working with the Mexican Fine Arts
22 Museum in Pilsen; and
23 WHEREAS, Mr. Esparza will be deeply missed by his family
24 and friends, especially his wife, Maria, and his nine
25 surviving children; one son, Jaime, was killed while trying
26 to save his father; therefore, be it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
29 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Raul Esparza and
30 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and

2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to his widow, Maria Esparza.
