1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Michael Maggio, who recently passed
5 away; and
6 WHEREAS, Michael Maggio was born and raised in Chicago;
7 he attended Holy Cross High School and studied at DePaul
8 University before he transferred to the University of
9 Arizona, where he received both undergraduate and graduate
10 degrees in theater; and
11 WHEREAS, Michael Maggio returned to Chicago and directed
12 his first musical "Fiddler on the Roof" for SCT Productions;
13 he was recognized as a hot, young director after his
14 production of "Candide" for SCT Productions in 1977; and
15 WHEREAS, Michael Maggio went on to work full-time with
16 the Court Theatre at the University of Chicago, Wisdom Bridge
17 and Remains Theatres, and the Woodstock Music Theatre
18 Festival; he was artistic director of Northlight Theatre in
19 Evanston from 1984 to 1987; his 1985 production of "The Real
20 Thing" by Tom Stoppard established him as a premiere
21 interpreter of plays by Mr. Stoppard; and
22 WHEREAS, In 1977 he produced his first show at the
23 Goodman Theatre, "Cyrano de Bergerac"; he was appointed a
24 Goodman associate artistic director in 1987; in 1993 he won
25 Jeff Awards for direction of a new musical, "Wings", and a
26 new drama, "Black Snow"; his last play for Goodman Theatre
27 was the direction of "Boy Gets Girl", which was to be
28 restaged next year at the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York
29 City; and
30 WHEREAS, His additional credits include the Jeff
31 Award-winning musical "A Little Night Music", as well as

1 productions for the New York Shakespeare Festival, Guthrie
2 Theatre in Minneapolis, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Actors
3 Theatre of Louisville, Arizona Theatre Company, Cleveland
4 Playhouse, and Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.; and
5 WHEREAS, Michael Maggio also worked as a teacher at both
6 Columbia College and DePaul University; he was appointed dean
7 of the Theatre School at DePaul in 1999 and directed several
8 student productions; and
9 WHEREAS, The passing of Michael Maggio will be deeply
10 felt by all who knew him, especially his wife, Rachel Kraft;
11 his son, Ben; his parents, Carlo and Genevieve Maggio; his
12 sister, Dona, and his brother-in-law, Thomas Will; therefore,
13 be it
14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16 we mourn, along with all who knew and loved him, the passing
17 of Michael Maggio of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further
18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Michael Maggio.
