1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John H.
4 Lehmann, who recently passed away; and
5 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann was born in Waterproof,
6 Louisiana on March 8, 1932; after the tragic death of his
7 parents he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Gertrude
8 Johnson; after his graduation from grammar school he moved to
9 Chicago and attended Wendell Phillips High School; and
10 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann entered the United States Army
11 at the age of eighteen, and was sent to Germany where he
12 learned bridge building; after his discharge he went to work
13 for Sterling Wholesale and Hardware; he went on to pass the
14 high school equivalency examination and enrolled in the
15 Institute for Practical Engineering and Trade; and
16 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann went to work at Mercury Parcel
17 Delivery after finishing his education; he then started his
18 own delivery service, where he was awarded a contract to
19 deliver mail for the U.S. Postal Service; and
20 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann enjoyed working in his
21 community; he was the founder and president of the Veterans
22 Evening Out Service Club; he was the past commander of the
23 defunct Veteran Bridge Commanders in America; he was an
24 officer in Chapter 6 of the Disabled American Veterans, where
25 he was also a past membership chairman and a delegate to the
26 annual national convention; he also co-chaired the Forget Me
27 Not Tag Day and the Special Events Committee and was
28 transportation coordinator and liaison between Chapter 6 and
29 the Women's Auxiliary; Mr. Lehmann was very proud of his work
30 with the Disabled American Veterans; and
31 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann worked in his community in the

1 areas of health care, social services, and with schools; he
2 mentored young people and teenage parents and set an example
3 to the young people around him; he was a member of Trinity
4 United Church of Christ, and was supportive of the programs
5 of the church; and
6 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann was the president and festival
7 coordinator of the Old Timers of Lilydale Community
8 Organization; he was also very proud of his work with the
9 Lilydale and Roseland communities; Mr. Lehmann was an avid
10 morning golfer, a checkers player, and a storyteller, who
11 shared tales of the Army and his experiences; and
12 WHEREAS, John H. Lehmann is survived by his wife,
13 Augustine "Augie"; his daughters, Carol (Joseph) Bilunas,
14 Janice (Howard) Salmon, and Gail Susan Lehmann; his
15 grandchildren, Alexandria, Brianna, and Susan Rachel; the
16 twins that he watched over, Shakeza and Lanita Dalton; his
17 sister, Martha; his nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his
18 many friends and people that were touched by his life;
19 therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22 we mourn, along with all that knew and were touched by him,
23 the death of John H. Lehmann; and be it further
24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
25 presented to the family of John H. Lehmann.
