1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to
4 the family and friends of Max L. Whitman, who passed away on
5 May 26, 2000; and
6 WHEREAS, Max L. Whitman was the former president of the
7 American Public Works Association and former director of
8 public works for the village of Winnetka; and
9 WHEREAS, Max L. Whitman was born in Galesburg on December
10 15, the son of Harold and Marjorie Whitman; and
11 WHEREAS, Max L. Whitman graduated in 1957 from the
12 University of Illinois with a degree in civil engineering; in
13 1970 he earned a master's degree in public administration
14 from Roosevelt University; and
15 WHEREAS, Max L. Whitman enjoyed a long career in public
16 works; he was employed by the Illinois Division of Highways;
17 in 1960 he became village engineer and traffic engineer for
18 the village of Oak Park; in 1966 he was appointed director of
19 public works in Winnetka, where he served for 27 years; and
20 WHEREAS, Max L. Whitman was a life member of the American
21 Public Works Association, a 25,000-plus member organization;
22 he served as chapter president, representative to the chapter
23 of delegates, director of Midwest Region V, top 10 leader,
24 board of directors and national president in 1991; he was
25 also a member and past president of the Winnetka Rotary Club;
26 and
27 WHEREAS, At the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette,
28 Max Whitman was an elder, "befriender" and clerk of session;
29 following retirement in 1993 he volunteered for Glenbrook's
30 Meals on Wheels, served on the board of the North Shore
31 Senior Center and worked with the International Students

1 Association at Northwestern University; and
2 WHEREAS, The passing of Max L. Whitman will be deeply
3 felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife of 41
4 years, Sandra Whitman; his daughter, Katherine Whitman
5 Fuetterer; his son, Michael T. Whitman; his grandchildren,
6 Amy, Megan, Jack and Taylor; his brother, Jack Whitman; his
7 sister, Nancy Newlon; his stepmother, Lois G. Whitman; and
8 his several cousins, nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of Max L.
12 Whitman of Glenview, Illinois; and be it further
13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Max L. Whitman.
