1 SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, On Wednesday, March 22, 2000, the Clinton
3 administration formed a new coalition with state and local
4 officials to promote government purchases of firearms from
5 companies that have adopted new standards for gun safety and
6 dealer responsibility; and
7 WHEREAS, Calling themselves the Communities for Safer
8 Guns Coalition, representatives of 29 local governments and
9 the state attorneys general of Maryland, Connecticut, and New
10 York signed a pledge to give preference in their firearms
11 purchases to companies who adhere to a new code of
12 responsible conduct; and
13 WHEREAS, One large handgun manufacturer recently became
14 the first gunmaker to adopt the safety standards; it will
15 install gun locks and child-safety devices on all guns, adopt
16 technology within three years that allows a gun to be fired
17 only by its owner, bar gun sales, including at gun shows,
18 without a background check of buyers, and limit multiple gun
19 sales; therefore, be it
20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
21 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
22 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge State
23 agencies and units of local government in Illinois to give
24 preference in purchasing firearms to gun companies that have
25 adopted new standards for gun safety and dealer
26 responsibility.
