1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn
3 of the death of former Mayor of Highwood, Fidel Ghini, on May
4 30, 1999; and
5 WHEREAS, He was born in Came, Iowa, on July 17, 1913, and
6 moved to Highwood with his parents, Alfred and Adele Ghini,
7 and his brother and two sisters when he was 11 years old; and
8 WHEREAS, As a boy, he was a caddy at local golf courses
9 and at age 17 he became the chauffeur, gardener, and handyman
10 for Mrs. Hetler of the Hetler Lumber Company; he opened a
11 restaurant and bar, was in the concrete business with Guido
12 Serafini, owned an excavating company, and started the Hiland
13 Gas Company, which grew to 5 stations; and
14 WHEREAS, In 1940, he was elected alderman; in 1969, he
15 was elected Mayor, a position he held for 24 years; he
16 accomplished many projects and improvements during his time
17 in office, a new city garage, swimming pool, the remodeling
18 of the recreation center, new city hall and police station,
19 new water plant, the purchase of property for a new city
20 park, and the Highwood Library; and
21 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family
22 and countless friends, especially his wife, Josephine; his
23 sister, Caroline Moe; his step-daughter, Abbie Laursen; his
24 step-son, Charles; his nephews, Dale Snavely, Donald Snavely,
25 and Dennis Snavely; and his niece, Adelea Moe; therefore, be
26 it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
28 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow
29 and regret the death of Fidel Ghini and extend our deepest
30 condolences to his family and friends; and be it further
31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
