1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3 to learn of the recent death of Bob Boydston; and
4 WHEREAS, Bob Boydston was born on April 16, 1931 in
5 Chattanooga, Tennessee; Mr. Boydston began his musical career
6 at the age of 15, when he taught himself to play the guitar;
7 he credited Uncle Virgil as his musical mentor; and
8 WHEREAS, In 1957 Bob Boydston was hired to play rhythm
9 guitar with Curley Coldiron and the Circle "C" Boys; in 1959
10 the group changed their name to the Sundowners after the
11 retirement of Curley Coldiron; from 1959 to 1989 the group
12 played nightly for the crowds at the Bar R R, a club in the
13 Chicago Loop; and
14 WHEREAS, After the Bar R R was torn down in 1991 to make
15 room for a new office building Bob Boydston and two other
16 members of the Sundowners opened the Sundowners Ranch
17 Restaurant & Lounge in Franklin Park; the restaurant was
18 closed in 1992 after one of the members of the Sundowners
19 became ill; the Sundowners went on to perform at Chicago area
20 county fairs and festivals; they will also be remembered as
21 the band that performed with Joel Daly, the singing
22 television news anchor; and
23 WHEREAS, On December 1, 1993, Mayor Richard M. Daley
24 declared "Sundowners Day in the City of Chicago" in tribute
25 to the local band; and
26 WHEREAS, Bob Boydston is survived by his wife, Sue; his
27 children, Dale, Bob, and Hannah; and his many friends and
28 fans throughout the Chicago area; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
30 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we extend our sincere
31 sympathies to the family, friends, and fans of Bob Boydston;

1 his voice is silenced now, but his memory and music will live
2 on in the hearts of all that knew him; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Bob Boydston.
