1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn
3 of the death of Charles G. Carroll of Willowbrook, a former
4 minor league baseball player with several teams, on Tuesday,
5 January 25, 2000; and
6 WHEREAS, Born in Berwyn, Mr. Carroll was a soloist in the
7 boys' choir at Immanuel Lutheran Church in LaGrange as a boy;
8 he sang at parties and other social functions when he grew
9 up; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Carroll played baseball in high school; he
11 was unable to serve in the military during World War II
12 because he had a heart murmur, so he decided to play
13 baseball; and
14 WHEREAS, He played minor league baseball with several
15 teams, including the New Orleans Pelicans and the Pittsburgh
16 Braves; in the mid 1940s, he was discovered by a scout who
17 worked for Bill Veeck, owner of the minor league Milwaukee
18 Brewers, where he also played; and
19 WHEREAS, After playing baseball, Mr. Carroll worked for
20 Campbell's Soup and Gallo Wines in Chicago; he later worked
21 for Romano Brothers Wine and Beverage Distributors, as a
22 salesperson, where he was employed for twenty-five years; and
23 WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. Carroll was honored at a banquet of
24 the Illinois Liquor Store Association for his contributions
25 to the industry; and
26 WHEREAS, Mr. Carroll was a member of the Western Springs
27 Village Club; and
28 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family
29 and friends, especially his wife, Ruth; his daughters, Sharon
30 Eklund and Kathleen Hurban; and his four grandchildren;

1 therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
3 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow
4 and regret the death of Charles G. Carroll and wish to extend
5 our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it
6 further
7 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8 presented to his widow, Ruth Carroll.
