1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of
4 Herbert "Hub" Lyman Stern, Jr., who recently passed away; and
5 WHEREAS, Herbert Stern was born in Chicago, Illinois on
6 April 10, 1915; he was the son of Herbert L. Stern, Sr. and
7 Lucille Rosenberg Stern; he spent his childhood in Hyde Park;
8 and
9 WHEREAS, He attended Francis Parker, Phillips Andover
10 Academy, and earned degrees from Yale University in 1936 and
11 Yale Law School in 1939; and
12 WHEREAS, He served in the United States Army during World
13 War II, and worked with Army intelligence; he was stationed
14 in Burma, India, and the Pentagon, and earned the rank of
15 Lieutenant Colonel; and
16 WHEREAS, Herbert Stern married Grace Mary Dain Suber in
17 1962; as parents, step-parents, and foster parents they
18 raised 10 children; and
19 WHEREAS, His wife, Grace Mary Stern, served in both the
20 Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate;
21 and
22 WHEREAS, Mr. Stern was a partner in the law firm of
23 Gottlieb and Schwartz for nearly fifty years, after which he
24 moved to Rivkin, Radler and Kremer and then to Fagel and
25 Haber, where he was of-counsel until his death; and
26 WHEREAS, In addition to his legal work, Herbert Stern was
27 Chairman of T. C. Manufacturing Company, Inc., and was active
28 in numerous charitable and civic organizations, including the
29 being a member of the board of Appletree Theatre and the
30 Foundation for Hearing and Speech Rehabilitation, where he

1 was founder, board chairman, and a dedicated fund raiser; and
2 WHEREAS, Mr. Stern served the City of Highland Park for
3 nearly twenty years as Councilman and as chairman and member
4 of the Zoning Board of Appeals; he also served as member of a
5 special advisory committee which gave legal advice to the
6 city and aided in the redevelopment of the downtown Highland
7 Park area ; and
8 WHEREAS, Mr. Stern served as the chair of the Lake County
9 Democratic Party from 1968 to 1978; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Stern was an avid outdoorsman and world
11 traveler; he was an avid reader, gardener, walker, and jogger
12 and he passed these interests on to his children; He traveled
13 extensively, to countries from Nepal to Antarctica; Mr. Stern
14 recently bought the Ontario island that had been his boyhood
15 camp and turned it into a family retreat; and
16 WHEREAS, Herbert Stern is survived by his children, Gwen
17 Stern (Malcom Dow), Herbert Stern III (Brenda Taylor), Robert
18 Stern, Ann Suber Berger, Peter Suber (Liffey Thrope), Tom
19 Suber (Cary Griffin), Jack Suber (Lisa), Len Gowers, Mark
20 Shimizu (Shannon), and JoAnn Shimizu Sweet; his niece, Karen
21 Sloss Wilding; his nephew, Roger Sloss; and his twelve
22 grandchildren; therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
24 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
25 all that knew him, the death of Herbert "Hub" Lyman Stern,
26 Jr.; and be it further
27 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
28 presented to the family of Herbert "Hub" Lyman Stern, Jr.
