1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3 express their sympathy upon learning of the death of Reverend
4 Garfield Hubbard Sr. of East St. Louis, Illinois, who
5 recently passed away; and
6 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard was born in Coldwater,
7 Mississippi on October 16, 1915; Reverend Hubbard was a
8 graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois, and later
9 received an honorary doctorate from the school; Reverend
10 Hubbard and his wife, Mildred, were married in 1937; she
11 preceded him in death, as did their son, Calvin Hubbard; and
12 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard received his call to the
13 ministry while he was a member of Jerusalem Missionary
14 Baptist Church; he served as pastor of First Baptist Church
15 of Golden Garden from 1948 to 1950; in 1951 he was installed
16 as pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in East
17 St. Louis and served for the next forty-three years; he was
18 employed by St. Louis Malliber Casting Company when he
19 received his calling to serve in the ministry full-time; and
20 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard was a life member and past vice
21 president of the East St. Louis NAACP, President of the East
22 St. Louis Ministerial Alliance, a member of the East St.
23 Louis Business and Professional Men's Club, Urban League, and
24 the East St. Louis/Metropolitan Chaplaincy program; Reverend
25 Hubbard served as a St. Louis Auxiliary Policeman and as
26 deputy clerk for St. Clair County; he was a board member of
27 the Civil Service Commission and a member of the advisory
28 board of State Community College; Reverend Hubbard was also a
29 32nd degree Mason of Tyree Consistory; and
30 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard was a pioneer of the civil
31 rights movement who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.;

1 WHEREAS, Reverend Hubbard will be deeply missed by his
2 sons, Garfield (Rosceiata) Hubbard, Jr., Malvin (Karen)
3 Hubbard, Claude E. (Dianne) Hubbard, Danny (Carroll J.)
4 Hubbard, and Marion C. (Caroline) Hubbard; his 25
5 grandchildren; his 47 great-grandchildren; his brother,
6 Reverend Jonas Hubbard; his sister, Fannie B. Hubbard; his
7 nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and his extended
8 family at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church; therefore,
9 be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we extend to his many
12 loved ones our sincere condolences; the passing of Reverend
13 Hubbard will be felt by all that knew and loved him; and be
14 it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Reverend Garfield Hubbard Sr.
